THE ELDERSPIRIT COMMUNITY OF ASHEVILLE (ESCA)

Supporting Elders to Age in Community

Background

The first ElderSpirit Community located in Abingdon, Virginia and completed in 2006 inspired ElderSpirit Community of Asheville.  Our Asheville group benefits from their experience in the visioning process and issues related to development and living in community.

As with the initial community, ESCA is designed for older adults and is committed to caring for one another, spiritual growth, respect for the earth, and service to the larger community.  ESCA is considering a variety of housing options in Asheville, with a range of costs and sizes, located in a walkable neighborhood.

THE ELDERSPIRIT COMMUNITY OF ASHEVILLE (ESCA)

Supporting Elders to Age in Community

MISSION

ESCA is a participatory elder-rich organization whose members desire to create an intentional community with opportunities for spiritual development and personal growth.

VALUES

Mutual Support

Living in community, members know each other and are known.  Through personal relationships we offer and receive support; express our needs and convictions; listen to each other and strive to act responsibly, considering our good and the good of the other.

Wellness

To the best of our individual abilities, we attend to our own physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.  As a community we intend to provide neighborly assistance to members facing health challenges.

Spirituality

We believe spiritual growth is the primary work of those in the second half of life.  As a community we encourage one another to seek meaning in life and Spirit in daily experiences.  Acceptance of spiritual diversity is fundamental.

Simple Living & Respect for the Earth

Conscious that over-consumption threatens the earth’s living systems, we each strive for a simplified lifestyle that contributes to a sustainable, healthy environment.

Service

The community encourages members to help one another, as well as contribute service to the greater community according to our individual talents, abilities, interests and opportunities.

Creative Expression

Creative expression, as an integral part of our community, contributes toward refreshing mind, body and spirit.  We seek opportunities to share and develop our gifts and talents through a variety of activities integrating kindness and laughter.

Justice & Peace

Members subscribe to fairness as an essential foundation supportive of peace.  We are committed to modeling honesty, authenticity, transparency and equity in dealing with each other and the greater community.
