A Basis for Conscious Community Building

You for You

1. What individual visions, dreams and goals do you have?  At the end of your life, when you look back, what will make you feel that you made the most of your time on earth?

            - Purpose, mission, context for your life, if you are aware of one

            - Important values & qualities you want to embody and live from

            - Experiences you want to have, contributions you want to make

            - Where and how you want to live

            - Describe the factors of a rich, vibrant life with you thriving.  What lights you up?

2. What are you up to now, with timetables if any, and what is the bigger picture for this activity?  (e.g. I’m focused on school now, which will take me 5 years, with the intention of becoming able to support my family by doing what I love, and make a valuable contribution to society.)

3. As an individual, are there any things you know you “should” be doing in your life but aren’t practicing?  Do you have any plans or commitments to yourself about these?

You and Community

4. What do you see as the gains and the losses for you involved in long term community building and community membership?

5. In a community relationship

-What purpose does community serve in your life?:

            - What you’re in it for; what you expect to get, what you ask of others?.

            - What you have to offer; what you expect to give or provide to the group.

            - What do you perceive to be your own liabilities, vulnerabilities or weaknesses?    as a community member?  Do you have any commitments or plans to change or grow in these areas?

What “baggage” do you bring from your past that might cause some problems?

Do you have any commitments or plans to change or grow in these areas?

6. Your community vision

a. In a series of short sentences, describe all the important elements of fulfilling, inspiring community living for you.  What would it look like?  What would be going on? Start with the critical “minimum requirements” but also put in all those “extras” that would make your life great.  Do NOT base your answers on what you think others may want, or what’s “realistic.”  These are your deepest wishes and dreams for fulfillment in community living.

b. What purpose would the community have, if any, beyond mutual enjoyment?  How do you envision the group serving or participating in the larger community?

c. What key values would be shared?  How would these show up in daily living?

d. What physical elements are important to you in a community-- location, geography, climate, building style, aesthetics, and energy efficiency?  What bottom-line elements could you not compromise?

e. What facilities and decisions would be shared, and what would be private?
